4 Big Questions, Interpretation Of Tag Heuer’s New Heuer-03 Chronograph Movement

It is not too late to get to the topic. Not long ago, TAG Heuer released a new 2017 version of the Autavia chronograph, this 2017 version of the Autavia chronograph is a replica of the historical model of TAG Heuer. But unlike the historical model, the 2017 version of the Autavia chronograph began to use Tag Heuer’s new Heuer-03 chronograph movement. Since the first two years, TAG Heuer has begun to use a new numbering method for movements. Today, Heuer-01 chronograph movement, Heuer-02 tourbillon chronograph movement, Heuer-03 chronograph movement, Kind of movement. Our domestic players know that Tag Heuer has always used the 1887 chronograph movement as its main force and has mainly featured the 1887 chronograph, but now a new movement number has replaced the position of 1887. What I have to do today is to answer The following question ‘Where do these movements come from’?

The TAG Heuer 2017 version of the Autavia chronograph will use the new Heuer-03 chronograph movement.
The first question: Why did the Tag Heuer 1887 movement ‘disappear’?

The 1887 chronograph movement is the main chronograph movement of TAG Heuer then. It is used on the TAG Heuer 1887 chronograph. This is a self-winding chronograph movement that uses a cylindrical wheel and swing gear clutch. From the perspective of the time, it is a relatively cost-effective chronograph movement. Let players spend more than 30,000 yuan to buy a column playable chronograph with high playability. In addition to Longines L688 cylindrical wheel chronograph movement, another cost-effective cylindrical wheel movement. As a result, shortly after the 1887 movement was launched, Tag Heuer had to launch a new chronograph movement, which was initially designated as the 1969 chronograph movement that year and later renamed the CH80 chronograph movement. Why did Tag Heuer launch a new movement to replace 1887 in such a short period of time? The main reason I think everyone knows is because of the ‘identity’ of 1887. At that time, there were some discussions in the world watch fans about the technical patent sources of the Tag Heuer 1887 chronograph movement (I do n’t express any opinions on the details of this issue), senior players can see some and other The similarities of the movement, which led to the shake of the status of the 1887 movement. So Tag Heuer decided to replace 1887 with a new movement.

The TAG Heuer Heuer-01 chronograph movement can be regarded as a skeleton version of 1887.

Second question: Why did the CH80 movement that replaced 1887 ‘disappear’?

I was impressed that at the Baselworld 2014, Tag Heuer showed the CH80 chronograph movement, an alternative to the 1887 movement. CH80 is also a self-winding chronograph movement using a columnar wheel. Its biggest features are two. One is 80-hour power (originally 70 hours, and later upgraded to 80 hours). At 12 o’clock, 9 o’clock, and 6 o’clock, it became 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. It seems that everything is ready, and it was just launched, but this new movement CH80 has ‘disappeared’ and has not been launched as scheduled. Let me tell you why. Because at the time when preparing to launch the CH80, Tag Heuer found that there was still a large inventory of 1887 movements. If the previous movement is not used up, the new movement will not work. Therefore, the CH80 movement can only be put on hold, waiting for the right moment before it is brought to the market. Seeing that TAG Heuer has a large inventory of 1887 movements, TAG Heuer carried out an in-depth transformation of the 1887 movement and launched the Heuer-01 chronograph movement. Because the previous 1887 movement was more traditional, Tag Heuer made the 1887 hollow skeleton movement, which looks very modern. This is the current Heuer-01 chronograph movement of Tag Heuer, which can be regarded as the Tag Heuer. A skeletonized version of the 1887 movement. The Carrera Heuer-01 chronograph currently on the market, I think the price / performance ratio is not bad, mainly the hollowed out Carrera Heuer-01 chronograph is very modern, very beautiful, and the price is not high above 40,000 yuan. Although it is more expensive than Longines’ L688 cylindrical wheel chronograph, this watch looks even cooler than Longines. I don’t think there is any dispute on this point.

TAG Heuer has cancelled the CH80 chronograph sample.

TAG Heuer announced the CH80 chronograph movement that year, we can see that the CH80 is completely different from 1887, is a TAG Heuer’s independent technology chronograph movement.
Third question: Where did the Tag Heuer-03 chronograph movement come from?

Heuer-03 is the CH80 movement that was previously ‘snow hidden’. Heuer-03 is a movement developed based on CH80. In fact, there is no essential difference between the two. 95% of them are the same. The basic technical configuration is: columnar wheel control, vertical clutch, swing frequency of 28800 times / hour, 33 gem shafts, and power reserve of 80 hours. These are also the configurations of mainstream timing movements nowadays, and the technical configuration is more modern than 1887. Of course, there is a little difference between Heuer-03 and CH80. The difference is mainly in the appearance of the movement. First of all, the Heuer-03 splint has more hollowed out parts, revealing more parts. On the other hand, some decorative details on the CH80 were cancelled on Heuer-03, on the grounds that this could further reduce the price of chronographs using Heuer-03 movements in the future. It is expected that the price of chronographs using Heuer-03 movements will not be high in the future and will remain at the current level of TAG Heuer chronographs, but we can see that the configuration level of Heuer-03 movements has already exceeded the current 1887 and 01 timings The movement is a lot taller.

One last question: Why does Tag Heuer need a Heuer-03 chronograph movement?

First of all, strictly speaking, the 1887 movement cannot actually be regarded as the exclusive technology of TAG Heuer (this has been officially shown by TAG Heuer), so TAG Heuer needs a fully autonomous main chronograph movement. So this year or next we will see TAG Heuer watches with the new Heuer-03 chronograph movement. In addition, the previous 1887 and 01 movements still have a small problem that is easy to cause misunderstanding, that is, their chronograph is at three positions of 12, 9, and 6, this layout is very similar to the ETA7750. So it is easy for people to think of the TAG Heuer self-mainframe as a chronograph of a universal movement, and misunderstandings occur. So we can see that on Heuer-03, Tag Heuer changed the time dial to 3, 6, 9 position. Another problem is that the previous 1887 and 01 movements were relatively thick and not suitable for adding other functional components. So Tag Heuer’s new Heuer-03 movement is first an integrated chronograph movement, which makes it very easy to add other functional modules, such as a tourbillon. As you can see, Tag Heuer’s Heuer-02 tourbillon chronograph is the only tourbillon that breaks the record and costs only 110,000 yuan, which is actually a module added to the Heuer-03 movement. Therefore, the tourbillon can be added, and other functions are not a problem at all.
